04 Nov Lose that Post-Holiday Bloat
Bloating during the holidays is a common thing that people struggle with. The main reason why this happens is because of overindulgence. Our bodies are not used to the excess amounts of food and drinks that we have during this period.
It is also more common during this time because things we choose to ingest usually contain more sugars and fats, which can lead to bloating.
Warm Compress
Keep a hot water bottle or warm compress against your stomach. The heat and weight from this will help relieve the discomfort and will aide the gas to leave your body. You can also try taking a warm shower.
Make a Smoothie
Mix in vegetables like celery, and fruits such as pineapple and papaya. These fruits and vegetables are known to naturally combat bloating.
Do Light Exercises
As tempting as it is to just sit and laze on your couch, it is important to move when you are bloated to help move the trapped gas. Light exercises like simple cardio, yoga, and walking can help.
Drink Tea
Peppermint tea is widely recognized as a remedy for digestive issues. Studies show that it soothes the intestines, and relieves abdominal pan, which helps decrease the bloating in your stomach.
When to see your doctor
Bloating is normal and it usually resolves itself or with the help of natural remedies. But if your condition fails to improve and is accompanied with the conditions below, you may want to consult with your doctor:
- Diarrhea
- Persistent or severe stomach pains
- Bloody stools
- Changes in the color or frequency of stools
- Unintended weight loss
- Chest discomfort
- Loss of appetite or feeling full quickly
These symptoms could be signs of underlying digestive conditions so it would be best to seek your doctor’s help to be sure.
