Does Gua Sha Actually Work?

A new beauty technique with a tool that comes in an irregular shape, using jade, metal, or other kinds of stones, has been making quite a noise in the beauty market right now.

Gua Sha is known as skin scraping, scraping therapy, or coin rubbing. The traditional healing method was a customary practice in China and East Asia.

Some of the claimed health benefits of Gua Sha include:

  • Inflammation reduction
  • Relieve symptoms of migraine headaches
  • Neck pain
  • Perimenopausal syndrome

Research on Gua Sha

A 2017 study evaluated the traditional beauty technique’s effectiveness and safety on perimenopausal symptoms.

The study concluded that Gua sha therapy was effective and safe when relieving perimenopausal symptoms and improving the situation and symptoms of participants with perimenopausal syndrome.

In addition, researchers added that Gua sha looks promising as a nondrug treatment for the condition. However, there is a need for more studies to better examine Gua sha’s mechanism for treating the condition.

In one 2021 research, researchers noted that the observed therapeutic benefits may have been a physiological response to the minor bruising.
