A Guide to Female Condoms

There are condoms available for women, which are also referred to as internal condoms. It works the same as the male variant of condoms.  

Female condoms also help prevent pregnancy by blocking the sperm from entering the vagina during intercourse. It also offers protection against sexually transmitted infections and diseases.  

It has two ends and to use it, use your thumb and index finger to pinch the ring at the close end and place it inside your vagina. You should push it to the wall until it sits comfortably near the pubic bone.  

Ensure that the outer ring stays open inside the vagina. You can remove it by using the outer ring together and gently pulling it out to avoid any semen spillage.  

 

Effectiveness of Female Condoms  

Female condoms have a 95% effectiveness rate. If not used or worn properly, its effectiveness rate decreases to 79%.  

Other factors that could decrease its effectiveness include:  

  • If the penis has touched the insides of the vagina without the condom  
  • The penis was outside the female condom by mistake  
  • The female condom gets pushed too far  
  • Tears due to fingernails or jewelry  

Female condoms have longer shelf-life and do not need additional instructions for storage. In addition, it does not contain latex and can be used two hours before sexual intercourse.
