Spotting in Pregnancy: Why It Happens?

Every woman’s pregnancy experience will be different. What might be normal for your friends’ and others’ experiences might be different from yours.

During pregnancy, your body will undergo several changes, such as weight changes, skin problems, and mood swings, among others. If you are a first-time mom-to-be, some pregnancy symptoms might be confusing or scary for you, such as pregnancy spotting.

Why Pregnancy Spotting Happens?

Spotting during pregnancy can be caused by several factors, but it is usually nothing to worry about.

Spotting during the first trimester could be due to:

  • Implantation bleeding: spotting occurs between six to 12 weeks after conception. It is also believed to be a time when the embryo is attaching itself to the uterus. Spotting due to implantation bleeding can look light pink or dark brown and will not need a sanitary pad due to its lighter flow than regular menstruation.
  • Ectopic pregnancy: it occurs when the embryo attaches itself outside the uterus. Aside from spotting, other symptoms come with it, such as sharp or dull abdominal pelvic pain, weakness, dizziness, fainting, and rectal pressure.
  • Early miscarriage: brown or bright red bleeding with or without cramps could be a sign of early miscarriage. You may also observe other symptoms, such as mild to severe back pain, weight loss, cramping or contractions, clots with tissue passing through the vagina, and sudden decrease in pregnancy symptoms.

Spotting in the second trimester and the third trimester could be due to irritation to the cervix, which usually occurs after sex or a cervical exam.

Other concerning reasons behind spotting during these periods of pregnancy include:

  • Placenta previa
  • Premature labor
  • Placental abruption
  • Placenta previa
  • Late miscarriage
