11 Nov Know How Trauma Affects Your Health
Our experiences have the power to leave a mark on our lives and even shape the way we think.
Some experiences, specifically traumatic events, can also have an impact on your health.
People can experience traumatic events through unstable environment, abuse, violence, and prolonged stress.
Trauma and Your Health
Trauma can affect one’s mental health negatively. Those who experienced traumatic events can be more vulnerable to symptoms of mental health illnesses.
Trauma can also cause a person to turn to unhealthy coping mechanisms such as using alcohol, tobacco, or even illegal substances.
In a 2022 study, children who are trauma victims have shown symptoms of depression and anxiety.
The study added that victims of trauma have a thinking of not having the ability to live normally or that they are worthless, especially if they are being told so since childhood.
People who dwell in their traumatic experiences have the most likelihood of having overactivated stress hormones.
Aside from your mental health, your physical health can also suffer from trauma.
Trauma can also manifest as high-risk of viral infections, asthma, and pneumonia in school-aged children.
Other signs of trauma in children include:
- Failure to thrive
- Sleep disruption
- Developmental problems
- Difficulty in learning and creating stable relationships
Trauma may also cause hypervigilance or the body to be in a state of constant preparedness, which can lead to muscle tension, low threshold for startle responses, and sleep disturbances.
How to Address Trauma
Dealing with trauma takes time. Acknowledge your need for help and be willing to accept support.
Pushing others away might do more harm than good; there is no shame in asking and accepting help.
You can do some of these activities to help you cope:
- Journaling
- Regular exercise
- Practicing self-care
- Connecting with other people
Some complicated aspects of your trauma might need a more thorough opinion of a professional or your health care provider. By doing so, you are given the right treatment and proper guidance you need.
