Body Changes? Here’s Why You Should Stop Commenting on Other People’s Body

Holiday gatherings mean meeting relatives or friends you haven’t met for a long time. Most of the time some people cannot help but comment on changes they are seeing, including your weight.

Some people believe that commenting on one’s weight can motivate them to lose or gain weight. However, more often than not, this is not the case.

A 2023 study discussed that body shaming can have adverse effects on one’s mental health.

Body Shaming and Your Mental Health

Body shaming is described as either calling out or criticizing one’s appearance based on weight or height.

The 2023 study noted that body shaming significantly undermines the mental health and self-confidence of both men and women, regardless of whether it is body shaming in person or on social media.

The study also found that societal norms and external judgments can lead to a gap between one’s actual self and perceived self.

There are also other adverse effects of constant comments on one’s body such as:

  • It may lead to eating disorders and problematic relationships with food
  • Increased risk of obesity
  • May develop decreased self-esteem
  • Depression
  • Increased risk of chronic diseases due to elevated cortisol levels

One 2023 study also found that suicidal attempts and suicidal ideation are positively linked to weight discrimination or body shaming.

Finding Meaning in the Season

There are other ways to catch up with your loved ones and friends. You can start by congratulating them on any achievements they made this year or asking whether they need support if they are going through a difficult time.

The meaning behind the merry season is creating a loving community through shared positive experiences and offering support without hesitation.

Create conversations that are inclusive, supportive, and meaningful.
