How to Create Better Habits That Stick
Before setting expectations or thinking about a desired outcome, decide first which habit you want to change or incorporate into your life. Be intentional and realistic about it.
Think about which aspect of your routine needs some polishing. It would make including a new one easier.
To set in the mood of welcoming your desired better health habit, fix everything that needs to be fixed in your current routine. It can start with your sleep, nutrition, or exercise.
Here are some ways you can stick to your better health goals:
- Make it part of your identity: If you are aiming to exercise regularly and eat more healthy meals, you should also focus on becoming a person who is active, disciplined, and committed. It might include changing your mindset and beliefs.
- Stack habits habit stacking is a practice when you include a new habit to your old routine. If you want to learn a new skill, you can incorporate this new habit into your old routine by listening to a podcast while in transit, doing household chores, or working. However, the older you get, the more difficult it is to stack habits, as cited in James Clear’s book “Atomic Habits.” In his book, he cited research suggesting that adults have 41% fewer brain neurons as compared to newborns, which could make habit stacking challenging the older you get.
- Creating habits takes time: It takes time to create and change your habits. One 2024 research noted that four earlier studies discussed how many days it takes to form a new habit. The findings range from 59 days to 154 days.
- Reward yourself: It is important to recognize wins, may they be big or small. Celebrate your efforts and make it a point to track your progress.
- Share your better health goals with someone: telling your goals to the right people might help you achieve them effectively by providing a sense of accountability. Having someone with you in accomplishing your goals also allows you to ask for support when needed.
When it comes to creating better habits, the perspective should always be about the long-term benefits. The sacrifices and your consistency will pave the way for numerous better health moments in your life.
