23 Nov HPV Infections Can Increase Your Risk of This Disease
Human papillomavirus is a sexually transmitted disease that can cause warts in different areas of the body, affecting your face, hands, feet, and even your genitals.
It can also bring other complications, aside from warts.
HPV And Increased Risk of This Disease
Having skin-to-skin contact with the person infected can spread the disease, without any exposure to body fluids. HPV goes away without any symptoms. However, when you are infected with high-risk types of HPV it can cause other complications.
High-risk types of HPV, such as HPV 16 and HPV 18, cause around 70% of cervical cancer around the world.
Less common cancers caused by HPV include anal, vaginal, mouth, throat, vulvar, and penile cancer, according to the World Health Organization.
These can increase your risk of HPV:
- Have sexual intercourse at an early age
- Have multiple sexual partners
How Can I Prevent HPV?
There are ways to prevent HPV and its severe effects such as:
- Practicing safe sex: condoms and other barrier-type contraceptives are more effective in preventing sexually transmitted diseases and sexually transmitted infections. However, if used correctly, you decrease your chance of getting HPV.
- Book checkups regularly: Women should attend their routine checkups such as Pap Smears, HPV screenings, and transvaginal checkups. Work with your doctor to figure out the best health checkup for you.
- Get vaccinated: HPV vaccines should be administered before being sexually active. If you have been sexually active for a while, it is better to talk to your doctor if it’s still recommended for you to get the vaccine.
