Leading a healthy and happy life requires more than just proper diet and exercise. Living an overall healthy lifestyle means paying attention to things other than your physical health, but your mental health as well. Mental health pertains to your emotional and psychological well-being. Keeping your mental health in shape helps how you manage stress, socialize with others, and your decision making process.
Over the course of our lives we all go through mental health problems at least a couple of times. Our thinking, mood and behavior could be affected by factors such as:
- Biological factors, such as genes or brain chemistry
- Life experiences, such as trauma or abuse
- Family history of mental health problems
When your mental health concerns become more frequent that they start to affect your everyday life, it’s time to get checked as this could already be a mental illness. Symptoms that you should look out for are:
- Feeling sad or down
- Confused thinking or reduced ability to concentrate
- Excessive fears or worries, or extreme feelings of guilt
- Extreme mood changes of highs and lows
- Withdrawal from friends and activities
- Significant tiredness, low energy or problems sleeping
- Detachment from reality (delusions), paranoia or hallucinations
- Inability to cope with daily problems or stress
- Trouble understanding and relating to situations and to people
- Problems with alcohol or drug use
- Major changes in eating habits
- Sex drive changes
- Excessive anger, hostility or violence
- Suicidal thinking
Most mental illness requires medical attention, as the cannot be left untreated or they may get worse over time. Seek the help of a medical professional if you posses a multiple number of these signs and symptoms.
