COVID-19: Can Moms Still Breastfeed?

Yes, moms can still breastfeed their babies now. To date, the virus has not been detected in breastmilk or the amniotic fluid of mothers. This is why breastfeeding and skin-to-skin contact after birth is still encouraged. Breastmilk is important for babies as it is effective in strengthening the baby’s immune system by directly transferring antibodies from the mother to child. It is also the best source of nutrition for infants.
During feeding, mothers should follow the proper hygiene practices as a precautionary measure.

Wear a Mask During Feeding

COVID-19 is transmitted through droplets, so wearing a mask while you breastfeed your baby will ensure that they are fully protected.

Practice Proper Hand Washing Before and After You Touch Your Baby

Washing your hands with soap is the best way to ensure that your hands are free from dirt and germs. The soap contains surfactants that trap, break down, and remove the dirt and germs from your skin. Remember to wash your hands for at least 20 seconds.

Disinfect Surfaces Regularly

The COVID-19 virus can live on surfaces for hours to even days. So disinfecting high-touch surfaces like tables, doorknobs, handles, remotes, and switches is highly advised.
