Scoliosis is an abnormal sideways curvature of the spine that usually develops between ages 10 and 16. The spine curves forming a C or S shape. Severe cases can cause health complications over time.
Symptoms
- Uneven shoulders
- One hip higher than the other causing uneven waist
- Back pain and discomfort
- Loss of height
- Problems with walking and gait
- Trouble in standing straight
- Body tilts to one side
- One leg may appear shorter than the other
Treatment
Most cases of scoliosis are mild and don’t require treatment. If needed, treatment plan may include:
- Bracing to prevent further progression of the curve
- Physical therapy to maintain strength and relieve pain
- Surgery
