Waterborne Diseases

Waterborne diseases are illnesses transmitted through water contaminated with human or animal waste. These include the following diarrheal diseases:

  • Typhoid fever
  • Cholera
  • Dysentery
  • Hepatitis A

 

Symptoms

1. Fever

2. Loss of appetite

3. Nausea or vomiting

4. Abdominal pain

5. Diarrhea

6. Dehydration

 

Prevention

1. Make sure that drinking water is from safe and reliable source.

2. When in doubt, boil drinking water for 2 minutes or longer.

3. Cook food properly.

4. Practice safe handling and storage of food and water.

5. Only consume safe food and water. Avoid street foods and drinks.

6. Wash hands thoroughly before preparing food, eating and after using the toilet.

7. Dispose waste properly.
