Leptospirosis is a disease that occurs through the urine of an infected animal. Usually, this can be more prevalent during the rainy season due to flooding. The Philippines has nearly 1,600 reported leptospirosis cases for the period January 1 to June 3, 2023, which is 72 percent higher than the cases reported for the same period last year.
There are two phases of leptospirosis: Anicteric syndrome and Icteric syndrome.
Anicteric syndrome of leptospirosis is considered the first phase of the disease and accounts for 90% of the cases.
Meanwhile, Icteric syndrome is the second phase. It happens when the person already got better and has the infection again. This type of leptospirosis is more severe and less common than the first phase.
Symptoms of Leptospirosis in People
- Fever, headache, and chills
- Coughing
- Rash
- Muscle pain
- Diarrhea and vomiting
- Red eyes
Some people will not manifest any symptoms of the disease. However, there are some that could present more severe cases, with symptoms such as:
- Kidney and liver failure
- Jaundice
- Hemorrhage

Treatment for Leptospirosis
Mild cases of leptospirosis can be treated through simple remedies such as managing fever, getting plenty of rest, and drinking lots of fluids.
If the case is more severe, the patient will need antibiotics. However, there might be a need for more medical procedures if leptospirosis has already affected other organs.
