Epilepsy: Things You Should Know

Epilepsy affects people of all ages. It is a non-communicable disease that is characterized by recurring seizures.

The World Health Organization noted that around 50 million people around the world are affected by the disease. There are times when the seizures may be accompanied by loss of consciousness and loss of control of bowel or bladder function.

Causes of Epilepsy

  • Brain damage from prenatal or perinatal causes
  • Congenital abnormalities or genetic conditions linked to brain malformations
  • Severe head injury
  • Stroke
  • Meningitis, encephalitis or neurocysticercosis
  • Genetic syndromes
  • Brain tumor

People can prevent epilepsy by reducing any chances of getting a head injury and having proper perinatal care.

Applying measures to prevent stroke, any cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, or obesity can also play a role in the prevention of epilepsy.

When To Seek Medical Attention

You should see your doctor once:

  • Your seizures last for more than five minutes or are then followed by another episode
  • Still no consciousness or breathing after an episode of seizures
  • You are pregnant or have diabetes
  • Got injuries due to the seizure
  • You are still having seizures despite taking medication
  • You are pregnant

You should also ask for medical advice if you experience a seizure for the first time.
