Ayurveda: An Ancient Wellness Practice in Herbal Medicine

Ayurveda, also known as Ayurvedic medicine, originated in ancient India. The practice then further spread to Asia.

In today’s modern world, Ayurveda can reduce symptoms of anxiety, osteoarthritis, and even lower blood sugar levels.

Ayurvedic healing includes a special diet, herbal remedies, yoga, massage therapy, and meditation.

Benefits of Ayurvedic Herbal Remedies

Examples of Ayurvedic herbal remedies include:

  • Ashwagandha: it is best known for reducing levels of cortisol, which is also known as the stress hormone. A small study in 2019 noted that participants who took 250 to 600 mg of ashwagandha extract for eight weeks saw ar eduction in stress levels.
  • Boswellia: The herbal medicine is popular for its ability to reduce inflammation. It can also be an effective painkiller and can be used to prevent cartilage loss.
  • Cumin: It is popular for its nutty and spicy taste. Aside from that, it also offers some health benefits such as reducing symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome, which are bloating and abdominal pain.
  • Bitter melon or ampalaya: the Asian cuisine staple is also a star player for various health benefits such as reducing blood sugar levels and promoting the release of insulin.

Precautions on Ayurvedic Herbs

If you have a preexisting health condition, it is best to consult your doctor before practicing Ayurvedic healing. You should also not use Ayurvedic medicine in place of conventional treatment for a health concern.

In addition, consuming Ayurvedic herbs in large doses might not be suitable for children, pregnant women, breastfeeding mothers, people with medical conditions, and taking certain medications.

A 2015 study also found that people doing Ayurvedic herbal healing have increased levels of lead and mercury in their blood.

If you are eyeing to practice Ayurvedic healing, it is advisable to consult your doctor and buy products from a reputable manufacturer.
