Can You Drink Tea Before Bed?

Bedtime can be frustrating when sleep does not come easy. Luckily, there are ways to help lead you to your sweet slumber.

Establish a bedtime routine to get better sleep quality. You can start by steering away from your electronic devices, avoiding strenuous exercises, and steering clear of caffeine.

Tea can also be a remedy for your sleepless nights. Picking the right variant is the first step.

Teas Before Bed

When choosing tea to help you relax before going to bed, it is important to take note of those with caffeine and those without.

Bedtime teas should generally be caffeine-free. These are usually composed of herbal concoctions, which have compounds that ease stress, anxiety, and promote relaxation.

Some examples of teas before bed include:

  • Magnolia tea: it helps induce natural sleep in many forms of traditional medicine. It contains two compounds with sedative effects, which are honokiol and magnolol.
  • Chamomile tea: it is a common type of tea that can help with the quality of sleep. However, studies noted that it does not significantly affect people with insomnia.
  • Lavender tea: a 2020 study showed that lavender tea reduces symptoms of depression and anxiety, which can be a contributing factor to insomnia.
  • Passionflower tea: it could act as a natural sedative and help relieve symptoms of anxiety.

Some tea can relieve symptoms of insomnia such as anxiety and depression. However, it shouldn’t be the primary treatment to address those conditions. If your sleep problems persist, consult your doctor. If you are experiencing any mental health challenges, it is always best to consult an expert.
