Caring for Your Newborn: How Often Should You Bathe Them?

Caring for newborns can be a bit of an unexpected challenge, especially for first-time mothers. It is normal to doubt yourself, especially if you are venturing into your motherhood journey for the first time.

Lessen your worries and know the basics of bathing your newborn, which can be one of the most confusing tasks when caring for your newborn.

Bathing Your Newborns

For the first few weeks of their lives, you should give your baby a sponge bath.  A 2019 study found that waiting at least 12 hours before bathing them for the first time might promote breastfeeding. Another 2019 study noted that a bath within 48 hours after birth helps keep newborns at a steady temperature and assists in skin development.

Here’s what you should know:

  • Frequency: You will want to bathe your newborns once or twice a week until their umbilical stump has fallen off.
  • Bathing your newborn steps: bathing the new addition to the family is a process that requires grace and mindfulness. To ensure that your baby is comfortable while having a proper bath, follow these:
    • Start bathing them from top to bottom.
    • Focus on your baby’s skin folds in the thighs, neck, and wrists.
    • Ensure clean hands and feet thoroughly as babies tend to suck those.
    • Look for mild bathing products.

If your newborn has a skin condition, you might want to consult a dermatologist for a more thorough discussion and information.
