Why Working Out Makes You Happy?

The benefits of working out go beyond your physical health. Being active can boost your mood while promoting better sleep quality.

A 2020 study showed that physical activity has a connection to life satisfaction and happiness among three age groups such as young adults, middle-aged, and older adults.

The study also discussed that participants with a higher physical level tended to have higher life satisfaction and happiness, with the total amount of physical activity more important than the specific type of physical activity.

Why Exercise Makes You Happy

The reason behind the boosted moods of individuals who engage in physical activity is their elevated heart rate.

In addition, exercise increases your endorphin levels. Endorphins help ease pain, and reduce stress, while also improving the overall sense of being. Sometimes endorphins are called “runner’s high.”

Aside from endorphins, dopamine, and serotonin are also released. Dopamine acts on the area of the brain, which gives you the feeling of pleasure, satisfaction, and motivation.

Having the right levels of dopamine can make you feel focused, alert, motivated, and happy.

Meanwhile, serotonin, which is also known as the “feel-good hormone,” is a hormone that controls your mood. Normal levels of serotonin can help you feel more focused, more emotionally stable, happier, and calmer.

Low serotonin levels can lead to feelings of anxiety, sleep problems, depression, digestive problems, and panic orders, among others.

Working Out Other Benefits

Regular exercise can also benefit your heart health. Moderate to vigorous physical activity can strengthen your heart muscle when done regularly. It improves your heart’s ability to pump blood to your lungs and throughout your body, which results in more blood flowing to your muscles.

Regular physical activity can also lower your risk of coronary heart disease.

In addition, working out regularly can reduce the risk of other chronic diseases such as:

  • Type 2 diabetes
  • Cancer
  • High LDL cholesterol
  • Hypertension

Before immersing yourself in a workout plan for the first time, talk to your doctor about an exercise that is best suited for your health needs.
