Can Lack of Sleep Affect Your Job Performance?

Lack of sleep can greatly affect your quality of life. It can also increase the risk of several diseases such as type 2 diabetes, heart disease, stroke, obesity, and dementia.

In addition, poor sleep quality can also affect your job performance.

 Sleep Affecting Your Job Performance

A 2022 study on single mothers discussed the relationship between sleep deprivation and their job performance, wherein it found that sleep deprivation negatively affects job performance.

In the study, it was noted that sleep quality and quantity are one of the main causes of poor job performance, with poor sleep negatively affecting the employees’ attentiveness to the assigned task.

The study also found that sleep deficiency negatively affects one’s ability to complete a certain task in a prescribed manner.

Aside from poor job performance, lack of sleep also leads to detriments in productivity, career progression and satisfaction; an increase in job-related accidents and absenteeism. It also promotes counterproductive work behaviors.

Other effects of sleep deprivation include being more irritable, angry, and more prone to stress.

It can also lead to mental health conditions, such as anxiety and depression, which can make productivity even more challenging.

How Can I Improve Sleep Quality?

Improving your sleep quality might mean improving several areas of your lifestyle and your overall schedule.

Improve your quality of sleep by:

  • Making sleep a priority: check your schedule and allot time for sleep that will help you get the required number of hours without any interruptions.
  • Making your bedroom an ideal environment for sleep: invest in quality mattresses and pillows. Make sure that your curtains do not allow any external light that will interfere with your sleep. In addition, refrain from using your devices while in bed.
  • Focusing on your sleep hygiene: if you are fond of daytime naps, now might be the time to stop the practice as it can impair your ability to sleep at night, especially long naps. Moving your body during the day can also help you feel more relaxed at night. Create a lifestyle that can help you achieve your sleep goals.
  • Talking to a doctor: you might have an underlying medical condition that affects your sleep. Your doctor has the best idea when it comes to the kind of treatment plan that is suitable for you.
