What is Prediabetes?

Sweets are always considered a comforting treat, which is why it is understandable that many people crave sweets whenever something stressful happens.

However, excessive sugar consumption can cause several health issues such as weight gain, cellular aging, and even diabetes.

What is Prediabetes?

Prediabetes means having high sugar levels, but not high enough to be considered to be diabetic.

Children who have prediabetes have a higher risk of developing type 2 diabetes later in life.

Prediabetes does not have any visible symptoms. Darkening of certain areas of your body can be one sign of prediabetes. The affected areas can be in the groin armpit, and neck.

Some other signs of prediabetes include skin tags and eye changes.

Here are the symptoms that you have developed type 2 diabetes from prediabetes:

  • Increased hunger and thirst
  • Frequent urination and infections
  • Fatigue
  • Blurred vision
  • Unintended weight loss
  • Slow-healing sores

Family history and genetics are risk factors for prediabetes. It has no clear cause, but it was found that people who have prediabetes cannot process sugar properly anymore.

Other risk factors for prediabetes include:

  • Age
  • Weight
  • Diet and inactivity
  • Gestational diabetes
  • Polycystic ovarian syndrome
  • Sleep disorders such as obstructive sleep apnea
  • Smoking

How to Prevent Prediabetes?

Preventing prediabetes is much like preventing diabetes. It would help if you imposed some lifestyle changes such as:

  • Getting active
  • Eating a healthy diet
  • Losing excess weight
  • Not smoking or quitting smoking
  • Managing stress
  • Managing blood pressure and cholesterol levels

Changing your lifestyle habits can be challenging, but it shouldn’t be rushed. Seeing results might take time. What matters is you go slowly and consistently.
