13 Apr Chronic Heartburn? Here’s Why It’s Something You Shouldn’t Ignore
One of the early symptoms of esophageal cancer is persistent heartburn and difficulty swallowing.
Esophageal cancer is a type of cancer that is commonly found in the esophagus or “food pipe.” It is a condition that is more common in men, with risk factors such as drinking and tobacco use.
The survival rate for this condition depends on the stage at which it is diagnosed, ranging from 20% to 22%.
In 2020, it was reported that there were 600,00 new cases diagnosed and around 540,000 deaths, with southern and south-central Asia, southern and eastern Africa, and northern Europe having the highest incidence and mortality rate.
What Are the Other Symptoms of Esophageal Cancer?
- Chest pain, pressure, or burning
- Coughing or hoarseness
- Unintentional weight loss
- Worsening indigestion or heartburn
Am I At Risk?
Common risk factors for this condition include drinking and tobacco use. Constant exposure to substances such as solvents used in dry cleaning, mineral spirits, paint, and varnishes can also increase your risk of developing the condition.
Other health conditions can also increase your risk of developing esophageal cancer, including:
- Barrett’s esophagus and chronic acid reflux
- Chronic heartburn
- Certain inherited disorders, like achalasia
- History of head and neck cancer
- Human papillomavirus (HPV)
- Obesity or overweight
When Should I Visit My Doctor?
Symptoms that have become chronic pain or conditions should always be treated with urgency.
If you have been experiencing persistent heartburn and difficulty swallowing food, you should talk to your doctor immediately for early diagnosis and be given the proper treatment if it’s esophageal cancer.
