Thyroid Disease

The thyroid gland produces hormones that regulate the body’s metabolism. Metabolism is the process wherein food is converted to energy needed by the body to function properly. An imbalance in the production of hormones, too much (known as hyperthyroidism) or too little (hypothyroidism), can lead to several symptoms.

Symptoms

Hyperthyroidism
  • Unintentional weight loss
  • Rapid heartbeat
  • Tremors
  • Increased sensitivity to heat
  • Anxiety, irritability, and nervousness
  • Hyperactivity
  • Difficulty sleeping
  • Muscle weakness 
  • Irregular or no menstruation
  • Itchiness
  • Frequent bowel movements
  • Enlarged thyroid or goiter
Hypothyroidism
  • Weight gain
  • Slowed heart rate
  • Puffy face
  • Increased sensitivity to cold
  • Forgetfulness
  • Fatigue
  • Frequent and heavy menstrual periods
  • Dry skin
  • Muscle soreness and pain
  • Hoarse voice
  • Depression
  • Constipation
  • Enlarged thyroid or goiter
