Leptospirosis is a common bacterial disease that is prevalent during the rainy season. How do you get it? According to the World Health Organization (WHO), “leptospirosis can be transmitted to humans through cuts and abrasions of the skin, or through the mucous membranes of the eyes, nose, and mouth with water contaminated with the urine of infected animals.”

Signs and Symptoms

  • High fever
  • Headache
  • Chills
  • Muscle aches
  • Vomiting
  • Jaundice (yellow skin and eyes)
  • Red eyes
  • Abdominal pain
  • Diarrhea
  • Rash

How do you prevent it?

Avoid wading in flood waters

Flooding is usually caused by poor drainage and waste management. Places like this have a higher chance of rodent infestation, which increases the risk of getting leptospirosis

Wear rain boots if possible

If you are a commuter and have no choice but to brave the flood, it is important that you wear waterproof clothing, shoes or boots to protect yourself from the possibility of catching the disease.

Cover any cuts or abrasions

People with wounds can easily catch the disease more than others, which is why it is highly recommended to protect your wounds by covering them or wearing gear that seal out flood water.

Boil drinking water

Leptospirosis can also be acquired when ingesting infected food or water. To make sure, boil your water first to be sure that you’ve killed the bacteria in it.

Consult a doctor immediately if you waded in flood or contaminated waters even if you have no wounds, cuts, or abrasions on the skin. You might need prophylactic treatment.
